Eldon Dwyane Reed (85) of Dufur, Oregon passed away on January 8th, 2024, in his home surrounded by family.

He was born to parents Dane and Elna Reed on August 21st 1938 in Clifford, Michigan. In his early childhood, Eldon and his family traveled to Oregon as part of the logging community and landed in Dufur, Oregon at the age of four.

Eldon graduated from Dufur High School in 1956 as part of the last class to graduate out the old building of Dufur School. After graduation, Eldon joined the US Army in 1957. He spent two years in the service and returned home to Dufur in 1959 where he began his career in lumber at the Tygh Valley Lumber Company, later known as the Mountain Fir Lumber Company in Tygh Valley, Oregon. In 1991, Mountain Fir Lumber Company closed and from that day forward Eldon became part owner of the Mountain Fir Chip Company at their location in The Dalles, Oregon.

He married Beverlee Taylor in 1960 who survives him. Eldon is also survived by son Jeff (wife Nancy) Reed, Son Marc (wife Laura) Reed and Daughter Nikki (husband Bill) Parke as well as grandchildren Gavin (wife Morgan) Mark, Jason (wife Sarah) Reed, Conner (wife Trish) Reed, Rylee (husband Trevor) Lutter, Kylie (husband Josh) Duling, Cole (wife Allison) Parke, Sydney Reed and a host of great grandchildren. Eldon was preceded in death by his parents Dane & Elna Reed and his brothers Lee Dennis and Curtis Leon Reed.

Eldon retired from Mountain Fir Chip Company in 2002 and started his own school bus route for his grandchildren. Throughout retirement, Eldon and his Wife Beverlee enjoyed traveling and watching their family grow. Eldon enjoyed fishing, hunting, early morning coffee with local townsmen/farmers and his travels across the state with his greatest of friends, Ed Underhill.

Eldon was a devoted father and grandfather and an avid supporter of the Dufur Community and the Dufur Athletics club. You could find Eldon on any bleachers, in any gym or playing field across the US watching his grandchildren or others succeed in their love of the game.

To honor Eldon’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Donations may be made to the Dufur Athletics Club in his honor.

Barbara Louise Shearer, age 97, passed away on December 23, 2023, in her home in The Dalles.  Barbara was born in Antelope, Oregon to Dorothy Elizabeth Ann Rooper and David Crabtree. After Barbara’s mother died when she was just 9 years old, she spent much of her childhood moving around northwest Oregon.  She attended school in Wamic and graduated from Maupin High School.  She was married 77 years to John William Shearer.  They married in 1946 and settled in The Dalles, Oregon to raise their four children.

Barbara had a great love for all animals, especially cats.  She also enjoyed reading, sewing, horseback riding and spending time with family. 

She is survived by her husband John, their sons John Richard and wife Kathy, Gary and wife Dixie, daughter Mary and husband Terry.  She is also survived by grandchildren Cory Erickson and wife Paula, Mandi Coats and husband John, Kevin Shearer, Marcus Shearer, John Robert Shearer and wife Jennifer, Meggan Erland and husband Alec, and nine great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her daughter Linda Erickson and sister LaVonne Smith.

Per Barbara’s request, there will be no service held.  Those wishing to honor her life can make a donation in her name to Home At Last in The Dalles, Oregon.

We are sadly announcing the loss of our beautiful mom, a wife, a daughter, a sister, and a friend.
She loved with her whole being. She is truly missed. Rest in peace our beautiful loving mom and wife to Lewis White.
Veryl is survived by her husband Lewis White, her three daughters Anita Clever, Fay Kiser, and Nancy Shimp. Her son in law’s Tim Clever, Jeff Kiser, and Todd Shimp. Her step-daughter’s, Mandie White and Dasia White. As well as her sister’s Gail Sorenson, Marsha Morgan and her brother Tom Jones. Veryl is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren, niece’s and nephews.

Oscar William Gustafson “Bill” passed quietly in the early morning of December 5th. Bill was born to Oscar and Ardis Gustafson on April 16, 1944. Bill was the youngest of five children he had two brothers, Edwin and Stephen, and sisters Alice Anne and Marie. Bill was a lifelong resident of The Dalles. Bill attended St. Mary’s and graduated from The Dalles High School in 1962. Upon graduating he started work at Keith O’Brian department store. He later began his career as a stockbroker and then moved to Wamic to manage the family farm where he and his wife Kathy lived for the first few years of their marriage. Later they moved to town where Bill started his career at UPS where he retired in 2006. 

Bill was passionate about spending time with his family. He enjoyed hunting, always looked forward to his Monday night dinners with long-time friends, and enjoyed many hours of fun at the Kortge cabin. The highlight of his year was spending winters in Hawaii with his wife Kathy.

Bill is survived by his wife Kathy of 52 years, Daughter Laura Carrell(Jeff), Son Josh Gustafson(Brandi) and daughter Emily Callahan(Andy), and three granddaughters Madelia and Kathryn Bradford and Rebecca Gustafson. 

Celebration of life will be held December 16th, at 11:30 am at the Hiway House.
