Patricia Ann Skiles, a lifelong resident of Sherman County until recent years passed away peacefully at the Oregon Veterans Home December 14, 2020, four days short of her 90th Birthday.

     Patricia was born on December 18, 1930, the oldest of two children to Lawrence E. Kaseberg and Marguerite A. (Foss) Kaseberg in The Dalles, Oregon.  She, along with her brother, Larry, grew up on the family farm west of Wasco, Oregon.

     Patricia went to Grade School and High School at Wasco School, graduating from Wasco High School in 1948.  She was always quick to point out that she was the only girl in her graduating class of three.

     Patricia enrolled in Oregon State College, now OSU in the fall of 1948 and pledged to become a member of Delta Gamma Sorority.  She developed life-long friends with her sorority sisters and maintained those friendships and connections over the many years of her life.  While studying Home Economics at OSC, Patricia worked in the post office of the Memorial Union. Her attention to details served her well here and in the many activities she was involved with over her life.

      Patricia married the love of her life, Richard (Dick) L. Skiles on August 24, 1952 at the family ranch home.  She followed Dick during his years in the U.S. Air Force, living in Enid, OK., San Antonio, TX. and Sacramento, CA. They returned home to farm in 1957 and resided on the family farm until 2001.  In later years and with the failing health of Dick, they retired to The Dalles where she lived for several years following the passing of Dick in 2002.  She lived her final years at Flagstone Retirement Home and the Oregon Veterans Home.

       In raising her children, Patricia served as Cub Scout Den Mother, Mother Adviser for Sherman Assembly, Rainbow for Girls and was an active supporter of 4-H and High School athletics.  She was active in Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and supported Dick on many wheat trips during his service to the Oregon Wheat Growers League and the Oregon Wheat Commission.  Patricia was active in and served as treasurer of the Wasco United Methodist Church for many years.   

      Patricia loved her 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and a 9th great grandchild arriving this coming spring.  She was always interested in knowing what ‘everyone was up to…’ and lined her window sill by her chair with photos of them.  She followed them with their high school sports and activities regularly.  OSU Beaver sports and Blazer basketball were staples for her…

     Patricia is survived by her two children, Susan Fisher (Ralph), Sublimity, OR., and Shawn Skiles (Peggy), Dufur, OR., Her grandchildren, Sara Scott (Brian), Sandy, OR., Ryan Fisher (Kristianna), Tumalo, OR., Staci Calkins (Alex), Medford, OR., Erik Fisher (Lauren), Silverton, OR., Kristen Skiles, The Dalles, OR., Megan Neuberger (Will), Dufur, OR., Her great grandchildren, Uriah and Cole Scott, Troy, Linnea and Tobin Fisher, Emma Grace Fisher, Hudson and Rhett Neuberger and a Brother, Larry Kaseberg.

     The family extends a grateful heart to the staff at both Flagstone Retirement Home and the Oregon Veteran’s Home as well as the special care given by Sarah Fain.  You will not be forgotten.

     In leu of flowers, the family suggest memorials to:  Wasco Methodist Church, Rainbow for Girls Scholarship Program or the Sherman County Historical Society.

     Graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 2 pm at Odd Fellows Cemetery in The Dalles, Oregon.  Viewing at Spencer Libby and Powell Funeral Home will be Saturday morning from 10 am to 11:30 am.  

Jack Francis Myers, 84, of The Dalles Oregon, passed away on December 10th 2020 having lived many good years. Our dad went to sleep the night before in his favorite chair with his favorite blanket loving his wife Doris and simply didn’t wake up. He passed peacefully in his home of natural causes. 

Jack was born on February 23rd, 1936 to Frank and Myrtle Myers in the Eastern Oregon town of Weston. Jacks father worked repairing farmers equipment in the fields, and like Jack was a “Natural” Mechanic.

The family endured religious persecution and in 1942 when Jack was just 6 years old his mother was jailed for offering someone a Watchtower magazine. She received a 14-day sentence, but after 4 days, the local farmers contributed her bail money calling the situation ridiculous. She was later exonerated of all charges. This was the environment young Jack knew in his early childhood.

His family traveled to Camas Washington later that year for a Bible convention and Jacks mom liked the area so much the family decided to move and settle there.

Jack landed his first job working in a small gas station and spent lots of time in his teenage years keeping the family car running on a shoestring. The family did a great deal of driving in the ministry and in addition to keeping the family car running he was his sister, Juanita’s, “Pioneer Partner” for one whole summer.

They had just enough food to get by and were very resourceful. When the tires on the old Willys car wore through so badly that the inner tubes burst, Jack and his father would go out to where it broke down and stuff newspapers into the tire until it was full and get it back on the road (The original “Drive Flat” tire)

In 1950 Jack met and married his first wife, Shirley. They were married almost 52 years and they raised 5 children together until her death in 2004. 

In 2007 Jack met and married Doris and they lived in The Dalles Oregon serving Jehovah together until his recent passing. Dad and Doris were such a team for each other and all the ones they mentored. Their home was always a place you could go to and feel welcome. Often visitors would receive tasty cake or preserves from Doris, and then Jack would offer all the young mechanics in his world, a tool or some small thing that he had cherished.

Jack was described in many ways with merit. He passed down a strong “Work Ethic” to many younger ones. He provided for his family and taught them many an object lesson. 

When remembering Dad, the two words it boiled down to was “Peacemaker and Mentor”. His family meant so much to him. He was unendingly proud of his children, other children, the Men he worked with at Aphis Readymix, and George Schmid and sons in his decades of secular work. 

We knew that no matter how bad things seemed, he would have a kind word and what our family and the apprentices he taught came to call a “Mentoring Moment”. It started with, “you know I heard a story just like that one time!” 

He would then go through several examples of how things might go, and at the end of the story he would say, “I read that in a Book”. If someone asked, he would then tell them it was a Bible principle. Sometimes it pinched, but we knew Jack loved each of us so much that it just felt like a nudge with a velvet glove.

Anyone who knew Jack knew that he was the most loving father and husband a family could ask for. Jack was preceded in death by his first wife Shirley, older brother Jim, and his granddaughter Penny. He is survived by his wife Doris, his daughter Kimberly, and sons Leonard, Daniel, Tim, and Jack. He is also survived by his sister Juanita, and brother Ted, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.  

Jack and Doris studied the Bible with any who wanted to and helped many to find the answers to life’s big questions. It gave them much joy to see someone read God’s personal name Jehovah in their own copy of the Bible at Psalms 83:18.

Tia Marie Bailey, resident of The Dalles, Ore., died at her home Sunday, Nov. 29, 2020 under the care of Heart of Hospice. She was 67 years old.

Tia was born in Lubbock, Texas, on May 7, 1953, and moved to The Dalles from Amarillo, Teas, in 1990. Tia was an RN and employed at MCMC for 26 years until her retirement in 2016.

Tia is survived by her husband, Scott Bailey, and her daughters, Angel Steinke of Springfield, Ore., and Theresa Watson of Medford, Ore., and two stepchildren, Brandon Bailey and Amanda Bailey of Corpus Christi, Texas. Survivors also include siblings Mollie Lynch and her husband Jerry Lynch of The Dalles, Buddy Christenson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Cheryl Nemmar of Waco, Texas.  Tia had eight grandchildren that she loved dearly.

A memorial service will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Heart of Hospice. Tia was a devoted member of Gateway Presbyterian Church of The Dalles and had served as an elder. She also loved and enjoyed all the ladies at Calvary Baptist Church Women’s Bible study.
